Photo Rag® Metallic by Hahnemühle

Hahnemühle Rag® Metallic is part of the Digital FineArt collection and is made from 100% cotton. With a weight of 340 g/m², it combines the luxurious, velvety base of the Photo Rag® family with a glossy metallic inkjet coating that creates a unique visual effect.

Its natural white tone, free of harsh optical brighteners, serves as a base for a premium inkjet coating containing metallic particles that create subtle reflections and a luminous depth particularly noticeable in highlights and smooth gradients.

This is an acid- and lignin-free FineArt paper that complies with the ISO 9706 standard for museum-quality paper, ensuring high resistance to aging. It is optimized for inkjet printing systems using pigmented inks and is designed for contemporary photo editions, exhibitions, and photographic works where the surface plays an active role in the visual language.

Its nature is not neutral: it changes the way the image is interpreted.

What does it add to the image?

Photo Rag® Metallic introduces an unusual element to the world of fine art: controlled reflection.

Blacks maintain good density, although their appearance changes slightly depending on the viewing angle due to the glossy finish. Midtones take on an inner luminosity that enhances the sense of three-dimensionality, especially in night photography, portraits with directed lighting, or urban scenes with localized contrast.

It is in the highlights that the paper truly reveals its character: the metallic effect amplifies specular highlights and creates a visual impact that is not found in traditional matte papers.

The base texture, which is more subtle than in other art papers, allows for good fine detail without structural interference.

It is not a neutral medium. It is interpretive.

The Printer's Eye

I don't automatically recommend Photo Rag® Metallic. I suggest it when the image calls for it.

When you touch it, you immediately recognize the signature cotton base of the Photo Rag® family. It has body, weight, and a solid presence. But as soon as you tilt it toward the light, that metallic sheen appears, transforming the surface into something more dynamic. It’s not an aggressive shine; it’s a subtle shimmer that responds to the light.

Black-and-white can be very striking if the image has contrast and highlights. I’ve seen urban nightscapes take on an almost cinematic quality. However, if the work is delicate, atmospheric, or aims for a classic matte look, I prefer other, more neutral media.

When it comes to color, something different happens. Deep blues, reflections on metal, water, skin illuminated by controlled flashes… that’s where paper begins to interact with the photograph. It doesn’t merely support it: it enhances it.

Color3arte when the artist wants the artwork to have a contemporary, almost technological feel. I wouldn’t recommend it for timeless projects or historical reproductions. It’s a medium with a distinct character, and that requires consistency with the visual narrative.

Sensory analysis

Texture and Feel: A relatively smooth surface with a cotton base. The metallic effect is more noticeable visually than to the touch. It feels firm and stable.

Black-and-White Performance: Deep blacks with subtle highlights. Highlights take on a dynamic brilliance. Perceived contrast may increase depending on lighting conditions.

Color Behavior Enhances saturated colors and accentuates specific highlights. Ideal for images with luminous or metallic elements.

Recommended uses

Art / Reproduction
This is not the most suitable medium for faithfully reproducing classical paintings. The metallic surface alters the color rendering and the perception of the original texture.

Black-and-white photography
It works particularly well in high-contrast black-and-white. The interplay between light and shadow can add drama, though it is not the ideal choice for minimalist or soft-toned work.

color photography is where it truly shines. Contemporary landscapes, nighttime architecture, conceptual photography, scenes with reflections, automotive photography, and fashion photography with dramatic lighting all benefit greatly from its finish.

Exhibition Projects / Limited Editions
Ideal for exhibitions seeking visual impact and a distinctive look. It is important to carefully consider the room lighting, as the brightness varies depending on the angle of incidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the metallic effect very noticeable?

It is noticeable, but not excessive. It is most evident in highlights and light areas under direct lighting. It does not make the image extremely reflective.

Is it suitable for portraits?

It depends on the style. It works well in portraits with dramatic lighting or a contemporary editorial aesthetic. For classic portraits with a soft tone, it may be too expressive.

How does living room lighting affect the space?

This is essential. The direction and temperature of the light affect the perception of brightness. We recommend assessing the exhibition space before making a decision for an entire series.

Is it up to museum standards?

Yes. It is an acid-free, lignin-free FineArt paper that complies with ISO 9706, with high resistance to aging, part of the Digital FineArt collection.

Is it comparable to a traditional baryta paper?

Not exactly. Although it shares some of the tonal depth of certain baritone papers, its metallic character places it in a different, more contemporary category.
